| World Environment Day aims to inspire more people than ever before to take action to prevent the growing strain on planet Earth’s natural systems from reaching the breaking point. The2016 theme highlights the fight against the illegal trade in wildlife, which erodes precious biodiversity and threatens the survival of elephants, rhinos and tigers, as well as many other species.

| The document brings an input to the debate on the issue of renewal of forest resources in Cameroon, with a view to restoring landscapes. It is the product of a process which involved front line players such as the Cameroon Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF), the German cooperation through GIZ, as well as experts from both Government agencies and non-governmental organizations.

prepared a virtual special issue comprised of thirteen papers published

| 26 May 2016 – At a meeting today in the United Nations Security Council on the situation in the Sahel region of sub-Saharan Africa, senior UN officials stressed that climate change plays a direct role in the region’s security, development and stability by increasing drought and fuelling conflict.

| In Central Africa, trophy hunting constitutes an incentive-based approach for sustainable wildlife management. We collected data from the wildlife administration, safari hunting enterprises and local wildlife management committees, to provide an order of magnitude of the financial performance of this sector in Cameroon. In 2012, trophy hunting was likely to generate an annual turnover of € 7.5 million and its added value could amount to only 0.0001% of GDP although these hunting zones cover 12% of the national territory.

| | Bonn, 19 May 2016-The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has formally announced the appointment of Patricia Espinosa as Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC. It follows backing for his recommendation by the Bureau of the UNFCCC who met in Bonn, Germany on 15 May ahead of ongoing meetings to advance the aims and ambitions of the new universal climate agreement adopted in Paris last year.

An in-session workshop on long-term
climate finance was organized on Wednesday 18 May 2016 during the Bonn
Climate Change Conference session in Bonn, Germany. Building on the
constructive discussions held during last year's in-session workshop,
this year’s workshop continued to focus on the issues of adaptation
finance, needs for support to developing country Parties … and to inform
the second biennial high-level ministerial dialogue on climate finance,
which will be convened at COP 22…

Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) has emerged as a promising climate change mitigation mechanism in developing countries. This article examines the national political context in 13 REDD+ countries in order to identify the enabling conditions for achieving progress with the implementation of countries’ REDD+ policies and measures.

Certification standard bodies in climate
governance are assumed to function as independent third parties
agencies in transactions, providing trust and transparency to ensure
that the calculation of carbon credits is reliable. This article
investigates the validity of this assumption for the voluntary forest
carbon market by analysing the environmental credibility of baseline
scenarios of two certified REDD+ projects, in the Democratic Republic of
Congo (the Maï Ndombe REDD+ Project) and in Madagascar (The CAZ REDD+
Project).

A group of NGOs, including Fern, has issued a briefing paper calling
on the EU to strengthen the measures contained in the FLEGT Action Plan
as a way of tackling illegal logging. The briefing is the NGOs’
contribution to the policy debate related to the evaluation of the FLEGT
Action Plan, the review of the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), and the
EU’s commitment to halt deforestation and restore degraded forests by
2020.

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire - the illegal trade of timber and forest products in West Africa was the focus of a regional law enforcement meeting hosted by INTERPOL’s Project Leaf (Law Enforcement Assistance for Forests).The Regional law enforcement meeting on illegal trade of West African rosewood (held between 24 -28 May 2016 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire) brought together law enforcement representatives from Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Senegal and Togo.

operators responsible for the implementation of the CITES in four pilot
countries covered by the project (Cameroon, Congo, Gabon and the

Description: AWF is
looking to identify an experienced Chief of Party for its anticipated
Biodiversity program in South Sudan. This program is part of USAID's
objectives to build foundations for conservation, anti-trafficking, land
and natural resource management, conflict mitigation, and security, and
will enhance women and youth with livelihoods and economic
opportunities, through fishing, vegetable gardening and small scale
micro-enterprise activities to disengage them from wildlife poaching.
The Sr. Manager of IT Service Management
is responsible for the IT infrastructure and information systems for
the Africa and Madagascar region. He/she will work with the Country IT
technicians within the region to develop sustainable support structure
addressing the support needs of the users in the country and program
offices. The Sr. Manager of ITSM also works in conjunction with the
other Sr. IT Service Managers to ensure that global "follow the sun"
technical support and network operations coverage are maintained. The
individual will also address escalated problem resolution when
necessary.
The coordinator is responsible for
coordinating the proposal process, processing agreements and payments,
collecting and organizing reports and corresponding evaluation data for
both types of grants. In addition, the coordinator will serve as a
primary moderator of a special community of practice designed to promote
best practices for leveraging the Roots & Shoots model to create
meaningful experiences for young people in nature.
