Yaoundé, Cameroon, 19 April 2016 - Cameroon has today incinerated 2000 kg of elephant tusks and more than 1753 art objects made of ivory seized from traffickers over the years, at the request of the Head of State, His Excellency, President Paul Biya. The destruction ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Forests and Wildlife in the presence of the United States ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, and other partners, including TRAFFIC.
From 02 to 04 May 2016 the Climate Working Group will hold a sub regional workshop in Douala, Cameroon, aimed at decoding the conclusions of COP 21, preparing for the Council of Ministers on 10-12 May and upcoming events under the UNFCCC, in order to develop a plan of action for implementation.
A web-based tool that superimposes maps of valuable underground carbon stocks with great ape distribution in Africa and Asia – thereby making the strongest possible argument for protecting both – was launched this week in Monrovia, Liberia, by the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) and the United Nations Collaborative Programme for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN-REDD Programme).
The special session of the COMIFAC Council of Ministers will be held from 10 to 12 May 2016 in Kinshasa. The main purpose of the session on the one hand, is to decide on the operational conditions for implementing the decisions of COP-21 of Paris, and on the other hand, consider some important matters relating to the life of the institution.

11 April 2016 - Only two weeks ahead of the signing of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the 197 parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer have taken steps towards amending the Protocol to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which will help curb global warming.

On Friday, 22 April 2016, the signing ceremony for the Paris Agreement on Climate Change took place at the UN Headquarters in New York. Following an opening ceremony, 175 countries signed the Paris Agreement, the largest number of countries to ever sign a multilateral agreement on the day on which it opens for signature. After signing, Heads of State and Government met in parallel sessions to deliver national statements addressing their intention to ratify the Agreement, and outline their climate change policies and actions.

On April 7, 2016 the World Bank Group announced the launch of its new Climate Change Action Plan, which aims to accelerate efforts to tackle climate change over the next five years and help developing countries deliver on their national climate plans submitted for the historic climate agreement reached at COP21 in Paris in December last year.

Call for Sessions: 2016 Africa ESP Conference

The first Regional 2016 Africa ESP Conference: Ecosystem Services for SDGs in Africa to be held in Nairobi, Kenya on November 21-25 2016 is accepting session proposals.
The conference will be Africa’s largest event in 2016 that links science, policy and practice on ecosystem services (ES) and natural capital. The central theme ‘Ecosystem Services for SDGs in Africa’ focuses on practice and implementation, which showcases knowledge and research as well as shares working examples from business, land management, policy and local practice.

Yaounde (Cameroon) - the Cameroon Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife on  Tuesday in Yaounde, incinerated 2000 elephant tusks and 1,753 ivory works of art seized from poachers and traffickers.

During the first term of the U.S. leadership of the newly created Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) from 2003 to 2005, the foundations were set for the institution to play an important role in the management of forests and natural resources in Central Africa.

This year, Earth Day coincides with the signing ceremony for the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which will take place at UN Headquarters in New York. The Agreement was adopted by all 196 Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at COP21 in Paris on 12 December 2015.

11 April 2016: Bioversity International has published an edited volume examining technical, policy and legal issues relating to the conservation and use of crop plant varieties developed by local farmers. The publication also examines approaches to increase the share of benefits farmers receive from the use of such varieties.
8 April 2016: A report, titled ‘Boosting Africa's Soils: From the Abuja Declaration on Fertilizers to a Sustainable Soil Management Framework for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa by 2030,' explores how various regional plans for enhancing agricultural productivity can take “better consideration of the approaches and needs of African farmers under the umbrella of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
7 April 2016: A number of private banks and the World Bank Group (WBG) have announced initiatives that will contribute to implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change, which was adopted in December 2015, as well as various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By pledging US$7 billion, a group of eight banks and investors have joined the Bank of America's initiative aimed at stimulating US$10 billion for investments in clean energy and sustainable development.

This brief describes a climate-integrated Community-based Early Warning System implemented by the Adaptation Learning Programme (ALP) in Dakoro, Niger. Integration of Community-based adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR) is important in a context of chronic vulnerability, recurring emergencies and increasingly unpredictable and extreme weather events associated with climate change. 7 April 2016: In the Paris Agreement, agreed upon by 195 UN Member States in December 2015, countries agreed to make “finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate-resilient development.” Developing countries will receive financial resources for both mitigation and adaptation actions, while developed countries are expected to continue to lead in mobilizing climate finance from a variety of sources, with public funds playing a significant role in reaching the previously agreed US$100 billion annual target by 2020.
