The Eighth Environment for Europe (EfE) Ministerial Conference convened from 8 - 10 June 2016, in Batumi, Georgia. Ministers and heads of delegations from 44 countries in the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) region and the representative of the European Commission (EC) attended alongside representatives from UN agencies, intergovernmental organizations, regional organizations and civil society.

The World Bank Country Performance Portfolio Review (CPPR), which took place in the conference room of the Radisson Blu Hotel, on 20 June 2016, in Brazzaville, provided the setting for the National REDD Coordinating Unit for the launch of its 4th national campaign to raise stakeholder awareness on REDD+ and R-PP. The campaign will run until 20 November 2016.

The fourth meeting of the Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) was held on 22 June 2016, at the headquarters of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), in Rome, Italy. Member countries and multi-stakeholder participants considered and finalized a proposal on CFS engagement in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) to be submitted to the CFS 43rd Plenary session (17-22 October 2016).

Karthala has picked a few of its seminal works from the last few years for fresh publication. The book, "Securing land tenure in Africa, for natural resource management" published in 1996, which includes among others, Etienne Le Roy’s famous chapter on the theory of land tenure, had been out of print for several years. The new edition has been expanded with three new short chapters contributed by each of the book’s scientific publishers.

In 2015, with the support of governments, partners, members and stakeholders in the field of conservation, IUCN’s  Cameroon Programme conducted a number of initiatives which yielded a wealth of results and lessons. This year, IUCN’s interventions focused on the following areas and ecosystems: North savannah ecosystems; dense forest ecosystems and wetlands; REDD + and climate change and governance of natural resources.

Happy summer! We’ve been busy in the last few months. In March, we hosted a workshop in Guatemala on innovative technologies for timber traceability. Co-sponsored by the Government of Guatemala, IUCN and FAO,workshop participants included representatives from governments,technology innovators, NGOs and the private sector. Representation from Latin America was particularly robust, but participants hailed from as far away as Ghana and Indonesia. 


…it is important for non-State actors to express their interest in becoming active members of RAPAC and enjoy trade-offs such as technical credibility, socio-economic legitimacy  and a high public profile(…) The Executive Secretariat will forward the non-State membership application to the Council which will review and then submit it to the General Assembly for approval.

Kinshasa, DRC—countries from across Central Africa met in November last year to strengthen regional collaboration in implementing National Ivory Action Plans (NIAPs) in the region. 
NIAPs are a practical tool to guide the implementation of actions to address the illegal ivory trade used by 19 of the countries identified by Parties to CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) as being implicated as source, transit and/or destination countries.

Launched in 2008, the FCPF was among the first multilateral funds to support countries in their efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD+). After eight years of financial support for REDD+ readiness, the first countries are finalizing national REDD+ strategies and seeking funding for investments to implement programs to reduce deforestation and degradation as well as the first multilateral performance....

The project is the first to be signed out of 10 projects with a total budget of €253 million adopted this week by the Trust Fund Operational Committee, all of which will address irregular migration and forced displacement in the Horn of Africa(...) Brussels, 18 December 2015 - Today, only one month after the EU- Africa Migration Summit in Valletta, a first project of €20 million has been signed at a ceremony in Brussels attended by EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica and Italian Director General for Development Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Giampaolo Cantini.


Toward “Concessions 2.0”: articulating inclusive and exclusive management in production forests in Central Africa

Industrial forest concessions cover about 45 million hectares in Central Africa. This paper discusses the weaknesses of the current concession model and initiatives for helping it evolve; it then proposes a new type of concession, entitled ‘Concessions 2.0’, adapted to the future challenges presented by the overlapping among the rights and modes of the harvesting of multiple resources.

Professional Development Grants (PDGs) provide support for mid-career conservationists to pursue short-term, non-degree training to upgrade their knowledge and skills. These trainings can include short courses, certificate trainings, or conferences among other training opportunities. Mid-career conservation professionals from select WWF-US priority countries must meet all of the eligibility criteria to be considered for a grant.

Deadline for submissions is 30th July, 2016. The ten (10) competitively selected business enterprises will receive all expenses paid trip (air ticket, conference registration, and hotel costs) for participation at the RUFORUM Biennial Conference (17th -21st October, 2016) in Cape Town, South Africa. The selected young innovators will also receive a competition cash price award.



At Pacsafe, the sea turtle symbolises the intrepid, global traveller. We are committed to supporting a world with healthy oceans and coastlines where all marine turtles, can travel and flourish in a safe environment. The Pacsafe Turtle Fund was launched in 2014 with the aim of supporting the conservation efforts of endangered sea turtles globally by providing annual grants to sea turtle conservation projects. 


A new competition launched today will award a $100 million grant to a single proposal designed to help solve a critical problem affecting people, places, or the planet. The Foundation’s competition, called100&Change, is open to organizations working in any field of endeavor anywhere. Applicants must identify both the problem they are trying to solve, as well as their proposed solution. Competitive proposals will be meaningful, verifiable, durable, and feasible.



The African Union Commission launches Phase 2 of the African Union Research Grants programme with an open call for proposals for Research and Innovation in Africa supported by the European Union. This call for proposal supports Africa’s Science Technology and Innovation Strategy-2024 which addresses the aspirations identified under Agenda 2063 and Priority 3 on Human development of the EU-Africa partnership. The call supports research on: Food & Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture (FNSSA) with particular attention on Sustainable Intensification.

The Fund Manager shall assist the CEO to; review and analyze loan/funding requests submitted by prospective clients ; develop and Review loan fund’s risk assessment tools; Strategize on lending projections and liquidity management ; analyze partners’ and clients financial and business performances ; develop, Update and revise loan fund policies; review financial reports; produce several monthly financial reports, including -but not limited- to the following ones.

 

The WWF/ICCN partnership is seeking a very capable individual who appreciates the challenges of working in a remote African National Park and can find appropriate solutions that keep the field staff operational and therefore better able to protect the parks resources.

 

WWF-DRC is seeking an experienced and qualified Landscape Rural Development Manager who will oversee the development and implementation of a rural development strategy in the periphery of Salonga National Park. He/she will work closely with the Park Manager in the Salonga National Park.
