The Network of Parliamentarians for Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (REPAR): The 100th member of the CBFP!

Yaoundé, 14 June 2017. In accordance with the commitment made in Kigali in November 2016, the Network of Parliamentarians for Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (REPAR)has officially joined the 99 members of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) which works to promote sustainable resources management and improve people’s living conditions.
 


The 9th Workshop of the Working Group of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (WGCCD) of the COMIFAC member countries was held in N'Djamena (Chad) at the Mercure Hotel in Chari, from 6-7 July 2017, in preparation for the Conference of the Parties 13 to the UNCCD and to develop a common consensual  sub- regional position on items on the agenda of the next CoP, scheduled for 6-16 September in Erdos, China.
 

Washington, D.C. (July 10, 2017) — The Adaptation Fund Board approved US$ 20.4 million in new project funding during its intersessional review period ending in early July – including a regional food security project along the Colombia-Ecuador border, a regional water security project in the Lake Victoria Basin of East Africa, and a mangrove restoration project in Senegal.
 


From 3 to 5 July 2017, in Douala, Cameroon, the African Women’s Network for Sustainable Development (REFADD) will be hosting a sub-regional workshop on feedback from COP 21 and 22, and to prepare the Network for COP23. The final communiqué of this workshop is available for download.
 


The Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development, Amy Ambatobe Nyongolo, announced Friday, 07 July 2017, during a press conference, that  the contracts of 5 forest concessions had been cancelled. These include the Bâtisseurs duCongo Sarl Group, the Ondika group with two concessions, Isolado and Action for the Congo.
 


Prof. Simon Lewis, a co-author of an article on peatlands in the Congo Basin published in Nature, recently proposed to scientists working on tropical forests that they sign an open letter asking the Norwegian government, which finances most of the CAFI (Central Africa Forests Initiative) programme in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to reject the “sustainable forest management” project proposed by the French Development Agency, to be funded by the CAFI.

A second setback for the French Development Agency (AFD, partner of Monde Afrique): its "Sustainable management of forests" programme was once more rejected by Norway, which funds the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI), at an 18 July meeting in Kinshasa.
The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) recently published an ITTO-commissioned global study on teak, one of the world’s most valuable tropical hardwoods.




The 11th edition of European Development Days opens tomorrow, 7 June, with a specific focus on investing in development. Europe's leading forum on international cooperation and development promises to be the biggest ever with some 7 000 participants expected.

Tokyo, Japan, 27 July 2017. ITTO and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have agreed to increase their collaboration on the conservation of tropical forests worldwide through specific collaborative activities in the remainder of 2017 and in 2018.

The FAO-EU FLEGT Programme is now accepting concept notes from government institutions, civil society, indigenous and tribal peoples, and private sector organizations in countries engaged in Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) with the European Union. Grants up to USD 110 000 are available through the Programme to support ongoing VPA processes in targeted countries.

Endangered Ecosystems of Northern Tanzania (EENT) is a Cooperative Agreement (AID-621-A-15-00004) funded by USAID/Tanzania and is designed to protect critical habitats and wildlife, as well as improve livelihoods in a well-defined ecosystem in northern Tanzania. The Chief of Party (COP) will be responsible for EENT institutional coordination and grant management with USAID and other USAID/Tanzania sponsored projects.
The Director, Climate Change, will be responsible to lead, plan and implement innovative solutions to address the climate change challenges Africa is facing today. Working within the framework of CI's Africa strategy as well as CI's institutional Climate Change strategy, this position will be an integral member of CI's team in Africa.
Conservation International (CI) is seeking an experienced leader to serve as the Country Director for our Madagascar program. Setting the strategic and programmatic direction of the country program, the Country Director will be responsible for senior-level program management and ensuring that program strategies, initiatives and outcomes advance CI's human development and conservation priorities. The Country Director provides broad programmatic, project, monitoring and technical oversight and continuously engages key internal and external partners critical to program success.   

 The Senior Enterprise Officer will lead in the development and management of the Conservation Enterprise Program in Ihemi/ Kilombero cluster of Kilombero Valley and support African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) partners in other Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania clusters for maximum conservation and development impact. 
The call for funding from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation will be open online from 3rd July 2017 to 11th August 2017 included. The pre-selected projects will be rewieved for a potential grant from 2019. Therefore, the funding requested must cover activities carried out from 2019.

As part of a team of four staff, the DRC Land Use Planning Coordinator will participate in the implementation of the DFID-funded Community Forests project, providing permanent support to the RFUK DRC Programme team as well as DRC partner organisations. She/he will take responsibility for developing pilot project(s) on participatory land use planning in DRC, which will be implemented at field level with input and engagement of relevant national and local government institutions.
