The Network of Parliamentarians for Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (REPAR): The 100th member of the CBFP!

Yaoundé, 14 June 2017. In accordance with the commitment made in Kigali in November 2016, the Network of Parliamentarians for Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (REPAR)has officially joined the 99 members of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) which works to promote sustainable resources management and improve people’s living conditions.
 


The 9th Workshop of the Working Group of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (WGCCD) of the COMIFAC member countries was held in N'Djamena (Chad) at the Mercure Hotel in Chari, from 6-7 July 2017, in preparation for the Conference of the Parties 13 to the UNCCD and to develop a common consensual  sub- regional position on items on the agenda of the next CoP, scheduled for 6-16 September in Erdos, China.
 


From 3 to 5 July 2017, in Douala, Cameroon, the African Women’s Network for Sustainable Development (REFADD) will be hosting a sub-regional workshop on feedback from COP 21 and 22, and to prepare the Network for COP23. The final communiqué of this workshop is available for download.
 

Washington, D.C. (July 10, 2017) — The Adaptation Fund Board approved US$ 20.4 million in new project funding during its intersessional review period ending in early July – including a regional food security project along the Colombia-Ecuador border, a regional water security project in the Lake Victoria Basin of East Africa, and a mangrove restoration project in Senegal.

The Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development, Amy Ambatobe Nyongolo, announced Friday, 07 July 2017, during a press conference, that  the contracts of 5 forest concessions had been cancelled. These include the Bâtisseurs duCongo Sarl Group, the Ondika group with two concessions, Isolado and Action for the Congo.
 


Prof. Simon Lewis, a co-author of an article on peatlands in the Congo Basin published in Nature, recently proposed to scientists working on tropical forests that they sign an open letter asking the Norwegian government, which finances most of the CAFI (Central Africa Forests Initiative) programme in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to reject the “sustainable forest management” project proposed by the French Development Agency, to be funded by the CAFI.


The European Commission and the High Representative/ Vice-President have set out today the EU's political priorities and concrete proposals for a stronger strategic partnership with Africa.


 Bologna, 12 June 2017 – The G7 today joined the G20, other countries and markets in throwing its weight behind a growing movement to turn the power of the global financial system to sustainable development.


Once again, the past year was the hottest ever. Sixteen of the 17 warmest years on record have occurred during this young century. This trend not only threatens the world’s ecosystems and biodiversity but poses a serious risk for peace, security and sustainable development.

A second setback for the French Development Agency (AFD, partner of Monde Afrique): its "Sustainable management of forests" programme was once more rejected by Norway, which funds the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI), at an 18 July meeting in Kinshasa.

The 11th edition of European Development Days opens tomorrow, 7 June, with a specific focus on investing in development. Europe's leading forum on international cooperation and development promises to be the biggest ever with some 7 000 participants expected.

ZSL are seeking a Landscape Manager with extensive and relevant management and technical experience, to ensure the effective delivery of ZSL’s exciting and rapidly expanding programme of work in and around the Dja Reserve. The post holder will be responsible for the development and implementation the programme of work, managing the associated human and financial resources, leading on technical and scientific oversight and ensuring a continuity of delivery of high quality outputs with significant conservation impacts.

Date of training: From 21 to 28 August 2017. Training venue: Abidjan - Cote d'Ivoire. This course aims to develop innovative approaches and sustainable solutions to hurdles in supply chains of agricultural raw materials.


The course is suitable for professionals who would want to deepen their understanding of the HCV Approach or be part of HCV assessment teams. However, this is most suitable for those who would want to achieve the HCVRN ALS Lead Assessor qualification especially for the RSPO and FSC HCV assessments. Equally suitable are auditors for the various agriculture and forest certification schemes which HCVs are integrated into their requirements.

The Greening Consumption and Production Massive Open Online Course runs from 31 May through 12 July 2017. This FREE, trilingual, six-week facilitated course is hosted by UNDP, in partnership with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the NBSAP Forum and The Nature Conservancy. Each week, the course facilitators will guide you to take online lessons as well as to read supplemental material, complete homework assignments, and engage through webinars and online discussions. The course can be taken in English, Spanish and French.
To support the delivery of its programmes in West and Central Africa and Eastern and Southern Africa Regions, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is launching a new project entitled "Stabilizing Land Use: PA categories V and VI as landscape mechanisms for enhancing biodiversity in agricultural land, ecological connectivity and REDD+ implementation". To enable successful delivery of the project in each of the target countries, IUCN is seeking talented, motivated, experienced and visionary persons to fill the position of Senior Programme Officers who will serve as the National Coordinators.
 
The Business and Biodiversity Technical Advisor will be responsible for the management, coordination and delivery of the Programme's contribution to in-country Africa conservation projects and grants.  In particular, this includes deliverables for landscape projects in Cameroon, with a focus on oil palm, rubber, timber, and mining. The Technical Advisor provides technical support on private sector engagement, industry best practice, particularly environmental best practice for production, and represents Zoological Society of London in its relationship with relevant industry groups and companies.

World Wildlife Fund, the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Chief of Party candidate for the USAID - funded Combatting Wildlife Crime Project (CWCP) in KAZA and Namibia, a part of USAID's regional Combatting Wildlife Crime in Southern Africa Program. The CWCP seeks to counter growing threats from transnational wildlife crime to globally important populations of black rhino and elephant in northwest Namibia and the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), respectively.
